The “Arab Health” Personal and Professional Achievement Award

The Award: Established to honor the otolaryngologists who exemplified through their personal life and professional careers deep commitment to the culture and values of the different communities in the Middle East along with determination to further scientific, medical and general development in the area.
2006: Professor Awad Al Sarhani - KSA
2007: Dr. Siraj Zakzouk  - KSA
2008: Professor Mohammad Khalifa - Egypt
To be awarded in 2009 to Hashim Ibrahim Ahmed Yagi from Sudan.

Throughout his professional career both in Saudi Arabia and later in Sudan, Professor Yagi has demonstrated a total and untiring commitment to the advancement of professional and training standards in Otolaryngology. He was instrumental in establishing specialization in ENT as Medical Doctorate at the University of Khartoum and was the first in Sudan to receive the title of Professor in Otolaryngology. Professor Yagi is well known for his humble character and dedication to his students and patients.


The “Ingeborg and Erwin Hochmair” Award for Service to the Deaf
The Award: Established in association with Medel Medical Electronics and bearing the names of its co-founders, the award honors programs and physicians who contributed the most to helping the deaf community in the Middle East.

2007: Queen ALIA Foundation for hearing & speech - Jordan
2008: Jeddah Institute for Speech & Hearing(JISH) - KSA
To be awarded in 2009 to Ahmed Handoussa from Qatar.

Born in 1950 to Prof. A. Handoussa, the first Professor of Otolaryngology in Cairo University, he carried on the family heritage of excellence and leadership. Dr.  Handoussa has been a leader in introducing patients in the Middle East and their families to the miracles of cochlear implants. He demonstrated how cochlear implantation can be integrated into private practice and that leadership in introducing new treatments is not limited to academic institutions.


The “Karl Storz” Award for Excellence in Teaching
The Award: Established in association with Karl Storz-Endoscope and bearing the name of its founder, the award honors the person who contributed the most to the education of ENT physicians in the Middle East.
2006: Professor Reda Kamel - Egypt
2007: Dr. Mazin Al Khabori - Muscat
2008: Dr. Khairy Alhag Abu Shara - Kuwait
To be awarded in 2009 to Musa Naeem Al-Jamal from Jordan.

Professor Musa has been instrumental in developing training programs and certification in Otolaryngology in Jordan and across the Middle East. He led the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Jordan from 1978 till 1996 and oversaw the training of more than 30 residents who received the qualification in ENT in Jordan. He was a leader in advancing area wide certification and is held in the highest regards by colleagues, students and patients.
