Art Galleries

While you may not find the Tate gallery or the Louvre in Dubai, there are a number of galleries here that exhibit art and traditional Arabic artifacts.

The Dubai Art Society was established in 1976 but only became popular when it reinvented itself in 1980 by moving to newer premises and, later, in the mid-1980s, renaming itself as the Dubai International Art Centre. Today, it is prominent in the thriving local art scene. At the same time, Ras al-Khaimah's Fine Art Association Centre is active in promoting the artistic skill of young artists in this northern emirate.

The Courtyard and the XVA Gallery are worth visiting and are examples of some unusual architecture.

Mushrif Park

Mushrif Park is a good example of the optimal utilization of the element of nature in public parks. Prior to the establishment of the park, the area was full of widely spread trees; some of them were more than 50 years old and 15 meters high. Moreover, the park has a dry climate and is located in the vicinity of the city center.

Far from the uproar and the noise of the city, the region has attracted many picnic lovers, who used to enjoy the beauty of its nature. Therefore, the Government of Dubai has decided to exploit these natural features and built, therefore, a park that carried the same name of the region...Mushrif in 1974.

In 1981, the first phase of development has started with the set- up of a ladies swimming pool, a fully equipped gymnasium and a snack house. An addition to building a rooftop for the men's swimming pool, an administration office and a main restaurant for visitors. Due to the large increase of the park's visitors number, and in order to improve the recreational services, and as per the study made by Dubai Municipality concerning the essential needs of the park, the second phase of development has been undergone. A variety of recreational and service facilities costing 17 million Dirhams were instituted. These new facilities and diversified possibilities to enjoy picnics and recreations, allowed visitors to spend their vacations more delightfully, reflecting the basic concept of entertainment brought by the Municipality to its residents.

Camel Racing

One of the biggest treats that the Bedouin race has to offer tourists this season is Camel Racing -- a sport that is seen only from mid-October to mid-April. Watching the muscles of those huge beasts ripple sinuously as they make a run for the finish line is not just fascinating; it is also a reminder of the wavy sand dunes that adorn the desert landscape. The way hump and dune entwine in a seeming embrace makes one wonder if land and beast have not conspired to weave their dance into nature's intricate design. What is more conspicuous is the skill with which young jockeys balance themselves perfectly on their precarious perch and steer these animals on the race course.

Camel racing is a common heritage sport and all are welcome to view them at the Nad Al Sheba racetrack, which also serves as the venue for horse races and the most expensive thoroughbred race in the world -- the Dubai World Cup.

Although official races are usually held only on weekends i.e Thursdays and Fridays, people are welcome to drive over to the racetrack and view the races as well as the training sessions. Additionally, there are no entry charges.

The races begin by mid-October. By the end of November, the older camels are ready to run long distances that measure up to 10 kms. While the smaller race lasts for approximately 14 minutes, the longer races last for 18 minutes. Each session is supposed to carry out 10 "shots" or 10 such races.

There are several racetracks all over the United Arab Emirates as Arabs are the greatest patrons of the races. They are conducted on almost all special national occasions. For those visiting Dubai, the Nad Al Sheba race track is the closest.

Horse Racing

The horse has always been an essential part of Arab life. Until recently, however, the relationship took the form of an enduring partnership based upon survival in one of the world’s toughest environments. With the arrival of prosperity, the Emirate's relationship with the horse made a crucial shift from survival to recreation. To day, all forms of equestrian sport are enormously popular in the UAE, with the pure-bred Arabian horse still having pride of place.

In 1985 the UAE joined the Federation Equestre International (FEI) and the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation was formed in 1992 with the clear mission to promote and sponsor equestrian sport in the UAE. Since the Federation’s inception, equestrian sport has become focused and highly successful. Racing has already taken its place on the world stage and show jumping and endurance riding are now poised to follow its lead. The Federation, implementing Sheikh Zayed’s directives, hosts an auction of Arab thoroughbreds each December to provide opportunities for citizens to own race horses and participate in the revival of sports associated with the country's heritage. A number of horses trained for racing, endurance races, polo and jumping are sold at the auction.

The souks on both sides of the Creek are attractive not just for their shopping bargains but also as places for the sightseer and photographer. A huddle of narrow alleyways has survived on the Deira side despite intensive building in recent years. In the tiny lanes of the spice souk, the atmosphere and the scents of the past can be savoured. Bags of spices, incense, rose petals and traditional medicinal products are stacked outside each stall.

Along the slightly larger lanes of the gold souk, each shop window is crammed with gold necklaces, rings, bangles, earrings and brooches. In the evening the area is a hive of activity. Gold prices are among the lowest in the world. In other small streets, the visitor can find shops selling nargilehs (hookah or hubble-bubble pipes) and coffee pots, and nearby tea stalls where both of these items are in daily use.

There are traditional bakeries where large flat loaves of delicious unleavened bread are baked to order inside a domed oven called tandoor. Small textile shops sell veils with decorated edges, pantaloons with embroidered anklets, and dress lengths with similarly embroidered necklines reminiscent of The Arabian Nights. Meena Baazaar, on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek are lanes full of textile shops, where a blaze of colourful raw silks and cottons hang in profusion in shop windows. Also, in this area, you will find the Al Fahidi Street souq - which is famous for Electronics.

The fish souk in Deira is an attraction in itself. Early in the morning and late at night, local fishermen unload mountains of fresh fish which they sell in a frenzied bargaining session. Kingfish, red snapper, rock cod (the popular hammour), barracuda, tuna, lobster, crab, king prawn, sea bream, squid, pomfret, shark, mackerel, sardine and other species are available in abundance for most of the year.

Burj Nahar
